Blake was born and raised in the still-frontier town of Odessa, Texas. A creative, bookish, and shy child, he did not fit in well with the rabidly football-minded folks in his hometown (no offense to the MOJO, but you KNOW who you are). He high-tailed it out of there about twenty seconds after they handed him his diploma and eventually graduated cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin with a terribly useful degree in Drama.
Since Blake is an intelligent human being, he concluded quickly that drama was probably not a big money-making option, given the odds. So he spent the next 25 years as an executive in advertising and marketing. After enduring a half-dozen terrible bosses and two layoffs, Blake decided to make a mid-life career change. After a lifetime of yearning to help others, he chose to pursue his Master of Arts in Professional Counseling at Amberton University, graduating in the summer of 2010.
Blake started at LifeWorks as a student intern, doing two full tours of duty in our intern corps (lucky for us, he excelled at not only the clinical work but also the dull, eye-crossing admin duties). Though his full time work is currently with Metrocare, working with indigent clients, dual diagnosis cases, severe depression, alcoholism, addiction and other dreadful maladies, Blake continues to brighten our days as a part-timer at LifeWorks. Relentlessly cheerful, Blake brings to the table the wisdom gained from his early years as an outsider in an insider world and the hard-won compassion that only a life fully lived can knock into a person. He also loans us his ‘70’s vintage tinsel Christmas tree every year, which is reason enough to keep him around.
When he’s not working, Blake is a collector of vintage automobiles, which he restores himself, and is the proud parents of two very large, very hairy dogs. He has also mastered the art of safely removing raccoons from his attic and releasing them so that they can go live in someone else’s attic.
Blake works in both the Dallas and Ft. Worth offices. He charges $85 for a 50- minute session.
Issues near and dear to Blake’s heart include: relationship issues, career direction, mid-life crisis, and the GLBT community.
