maddie cohen

Maddie Cohen specializes in play therapy and sexual developmentMadeline “Maddie” Cohen is a first generation Texan, born and raised right here in Dallas. She did temporarily relocate to the University of Denver for college, but recognized the error of her ways and returned forthwith after graduation.  Her move to the Great White West does not reflect on her love for our great state. It simply signifies her desire to trade in water skiing for snow skiing.  She got a bit more than she bargained for.

Four years later with a business degree and frostbite, Maddie came back home to the sometimes unappreciated ‘warmth’ of Dallas. She took a seat in the family business and did great until it was sold. No worries. It gave her perspective. Sort of like that Colorado snow skiing. Ride a trail as far as it will go, then without pause catch a lift to a new one.

Maddie promptly punched her lift ticket for the University of North Texas, where she completed a Masters Degree in counseling with a specialty in children’s play therapy and the child-parent relationship. She is now a full-time LifeWorker, responsible for developing our children’s programming and also for providing marketing support for LifeWorks and her fellow LifeWorkers.

Since adding play therapy and other child-focused therapies to our offerings at LifeWorks, Maddie has not only helped transform the atmosphere in our offices by adding Barbie dolls, chalkboard walls and our very own play kitchen, she has also brought her tender and patient spirit to her work with kids dealing with a wide variety of difficult issues.  Maddie often walks out of a session musing to herself about the significance of the stuffed monkey in her last session with a three year old, or pondering ways to help a hyperactive 5 year old to communicate feelings instead of acting them out like the Tasmanian Devil.

In addition to her work with kids and their families, she is interested in gender and sexuality identity development in children and adolescents, and works closely with families and the rest of the LifeWorks staff to help these kids navigate their way through complicated and sensitive issues.

Maddie’s spare time is balanced out with pilates, yoga, horses and cooking gourmet food. A final tidbit for anyone hung up on her time as a defector in Denver: Maddie really is true to the Lone Star. She has a yellow lab named Ellie May and a cat named Texas.

Maddie works in our Dallas office.  She charges $85 for a 50-minute session.
