For many people, sexual addiction is a “yeah, right” disorder. An excuse for promiscuity, adultery and a wide assortment of “shame on you” behaviors. A public figure gets busted with a prostitute or is caught in an affair or multiple affairs — and issues a statement admitting to a sex addiction and claiming a new-found devotion to 12-step groups. In some cases this is true. Claims of sex addiction can be a disguise for simple lousy behavior.
However, a true sex addict knows that immediate, shallow and ultimately unsatisfying “high” that compulsive sexual behavior can bring – as well as the inevitable cycle of shame, self-loathing and fear that quickly follows. Sex addicts are like other
addicts, in that they continue to participate in unhealthy compulsive behaviors that hurt themselves and the people they care about, despite obvious signs that their lives and relationships are crumbling around them. As with any other addiction, the spiral of sex addiction can result in the loss of relationships, jobs, and financial security. The sex addict often seeks help at the same point in the cycle that other addicts do – when their lives have become unmanageable and they can no longer deny that they have no control over this serious, self-defeating behavior.
